The Examined Conversation
What would a conversation have to look like for you to change your mind in it — and where, in your life, does such a place exist?
Public conversation happens almost entirely inside broadcast platforms engineered for spectacle — where the reply exists to defeat, the quote exists to mock, and the algorithm surfaces whatever spikes the pulse. Substantive exchange survives only in pockets, despite the participants, never because of the design.
Re-engineering conversation's incentives: sources as first-class citizens, appreciation that costs something real, no downvote to rage with, no algorithm to perform for, and spaces whose purpose is stated at the door.
souls citing sources unprompted; positions visibly updated mid-thread without loss of face; the most-tipped reply and the most *correct* reply becoming, over time, the same reply.
deliberation is assent slowed down to examination speed. A source tag is an impression presenting its credentials; a tip is assent made costly enough to mean something; the absence of a rage button is the space refusing to let passion pre-empt judgment.
Discussions — the 49 canonical question threads and every domain's Opening-Question thread live here; tips-not-likes, typed source tags, labeled sorts, no algorithm (`DISCUSSIONS_SPEC`). This is where Compassion's Domain 3 gets argued with sources instead of slogans, and where every pillar's "Open for Repair" questions physically live as permanent threads.
A settled position, stated plainly and kept honest by repair: if this analysis is wrong, it should be visibly wrong enough to be challenged and corrected.
The system is built to hold attention, not to produce understanding — engagement metrics reward whatever keeps the pulse elevated, and nothing elevates like outrage. That's why it stays broken: the revenue is advertising, advertising buys attention, and attention is cheapest to manufacture through conflict — a platform that calmed its discourse would be cutting its own revenue. The inefficiency amplifies itself: performed outrage trains audiences to expect it, which trains creators to supply it, which makes measured voices statistically invisible and teaches them to either escalate or leave. The business types that profit from the broken state: attention platforms whose entire valuation is engagement volume, the outrage-content industry on both poles of every divide, engagement-analytics and virality-consulting vendors, and the political fundraising machinery whose donation spikes track anger, not progress. The lock-in: the fight *is* the product — on these instruments, resolution is churn. Fixing it starts with the questions below.
Investigation, not agreement; these questions invite someone who disagrees with the Picture to test it, push back, or propose a better account.
